| Wendy here with a word about pancreatitis in dogs. There are a few warning signs to look out for in your pet. First off, if your dog is vomiting, disinterested in food, refusing to get up, or wandering around with an arched back, he or she needs immediate veterinary attention. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas and comes in acute and chronic forms. Acute pancreatitis is extremely painful and can be life-threatening. Chronic pancreatitis may be more subtle and dogs may respond to a low-fat diet and pain medications. Your veterinarian will guide you through the process but I wanted you to be aware of some of the causes. This first one is a hard one for me to, ummm...swallow, but fatty foods are definitely a doggie no-no. Just like people, dogs thrive on a healthy diet and exercise. Dogs exposed to rancid food or water can also be at risk. With all of this rain, please don't let your dog drink standing water! It can be a recipe for disaster. According to the "Whole Dog Journal" pancreatitis reports may rise after Thanksgiving when people tend to feed their pets table scraps. I encourage you to learn more about causes and symptoms. Two of my friends were diagnosed with giardia and ended up with pancreatitis! Here is a link to get you started, but be sure to learn as much as you can. I want you to enjoy a long, happy life together with your four-legged family member. Lots of love, Wendy |
